One of the most striking visual exhibitions in the world will be in Bath for four months as part of a major series of environmental events hosted by Bath and North East Somerset Council that will focus people's minds on why the Council is aiming to reduce its carbon emissions by at least 30% over the next five years.
Internationally renowned 'Earth from the Air' is a 120 giant street gallery picture trail of photographs taken by YannArthus-Bertrand showing how human activity has left an imprint. They are a record of what has survived the mushrooming globalised industrial economy and what changes it has wrought. The Councilhas worked with event organiser wecommunic8 to bring the event to Bath and has been supported by local and regional organisations -with generous support from The Roper Family Charitable Trust, Trevor Osborne Group, and Michael Edge.
Councillor Charles Gerrish (Conservative, Keynsham North),Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said: "Bath and North EastSomerset Council has worked incredibly hard to secure this exhibition that will both astound and challenge the thinking of those residents and visitors to Bath who see it. The pictures are simply breathtaking.
The Earth from the Air Exhibition provides the ideal opportunity to increase awareness and understanding of the environmental issues we face, like climate change, and to encourage people to join with the Council in cutting carbon emissions. We would like to thank those involved in helping the Council bring this magnificent spectacle to the area - The Roper Family Charitable Trust, Trevor Osborne Group, and Michael Edge."
The exhibition installation will continue over the next week or so, but photographs are already popping up in streets around the Abbey and already proving to be major focuses of attention. Once complete the exhibition will run from 28th August 2009 until 10th January 2010 and is expected to provide a significant increase in visitors to Bath and increase the amount of time spent in the city. The pictures will be spread as a trail through Kingston Parade, the Abbey Precinct, Abbey Church Yard, and Union Street. From November 4th it will relocate to the new SouthGate shopping
precinct.
The exhibition is the backdrop for several other environmental
